Swiss Regulations on Electric Scooters
Last updated: March 1, 2026
Switzerland has strict regulations regarding the use of electric scooters on public roads. As a responsible retailer, Kukirin Geneva aims to clearly inform its customers about the rules in effect.
What Swiss Law Says
In Switzerland, electric scooters are classified according to their power and speed:
Allowed on public roads
- Maximum speed: 20 km/h
- Maximum motor power: 500W (0.5 kW)
- Treated as slow e-bikes
- No registration required
- Minimum age: 14 (with M license) or 16 (without license)
If the scooter exceeds 20 km/h or 500W
- "Light moped" category if speed between 20 and 25 km/h — requires registration, liability insurance, and minimum M category license
- "Moped" category if speed between 25 and 45 km/h — stricter requirements
- Over 45 km/h — cannot be registered, prohibited on public roads
